The Conduit
Book One in the Gryphon Series
By Stacey Rourke

The Conduit

All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for.  And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met.  Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.
While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon.  She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop.  Life isn’t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn’t have to do it alone.  With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others’ nerves.  Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever—their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.

Excerpt:

“Okay, little side note here. If a psychopathic killer asks if you want to see a trick, say no. That’s the smart thing to do. I, on the other hand, responded, ‘Bring it’.”

Embrace
Book Two in the Gryphon Series
By Stacey Rourke

EmbraceWhether she likes it or not, eighteen year old Celeste Garrett has come to terms  with being  the Chosen One. She knew having a “normal life” would be tricky,  between intense training  sessions and epic demonic battles, but she didn’t know  at what cost it would come. That is,  until a dear friend is harmed by the  malicious forces hunting her.
Now, she’d like nothing more than to retreat into a hermit lifestyle to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. But startling revelations, amazing new abilities, and mortifying moments in front of insanely hot guys won’t allow time for that. Soon, Celeste finds herself surrounded by darkness and wondering who she can trust—if anyone.

Excerpt: (I chose this excerpt because I can just imagine hearing Celeste say it to herself and it so incredibly awesome.  Makes humiliating yourself in front of a guy not seem so bad in comparison.)

With narrowed eyes, he peered past me to the counter.  ”Ya sure it’s broken?  Sounds like it’s on now.”
I turned my head in the direction of the counter.  He was right, something was whirring.  I could hear it, too.  But it wasn’t coming from the counter, or the DOA cappuccino machine.   It was closer than that.  Close enough that I could feel the vibration in my chest.
Oh, sweet-mother-of-all-that’s-good-and-pure, IT’S ME!! I’m purring!

Independence Day

Hello Everyone,
How are you on this beautiful morning/evening?
It’s Independence Day here in the United States. Our Congress established the federal holiday in 1776 for US citizens to celebrate our country’s independence.
Because I am a writer I thought I’d share some info on a couple famous writers remembered on this day.

20130704-094233.jpg

Francis Scott Key wrote a poem called “Defense of Fort McHenry” written in 1814. It is these words that became the lyrics to our national anthem the “Star Spangled Banner”

O! say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watch’d, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there –
O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream –
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havock of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash’d out their foul foot-steps’ pollution,
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov’d home, and the war’s desolation,
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto – ‘In God is our trust! ‘
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

Paul Revere was the American patriot who rode through the town acting as an alarm warning of the British’s arrival by shouting “The British are coming! The British are coming!” This act was immortalized in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow known as “Paul Revere’s Ride”

Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.

He said to his friend, “If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,–
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm.”

Then he said “Good-night!” and with muffled oar
Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore,
Just as the moon rose over the bay,
Where swinging wide at her moorings lay
The Somerset, British man-of-war;
A phantom ship, with each mast and spar
Across the moon like a prison bar,
And a huge black hulk, that was magnified
By its own reflection in the tide.

Meanwhile, his friend through alley and street
Wanders and watches, with eager ears,
Till in the silence around him he hears
The muster of men at the barrack door,
The sound of arms, and the tramp of feet,
And the measured tread of the grenadiers,
Marching down to their boats on the shore.

Then he climbed the tower of the Old North Church,
By the wooden stairs, with stealthy tread,
To the belfry chamber overhead,
And startled the pigeons from their perch
On the sombre rafters, that round him made
Masses and moving shapes of shade,–
By the trembling ladder, steep and tall,
To the highest window in the wall,
Where he paused to listen and look down
A moment on the roofs of the town
And the moonlight flowing over all.

Beneath, in the churchyard, lay the dead,
In their night encampment on the hill,
Wrapped in silence so deep and still
That he could hear, like a sentinel’s tread,
The watchful night-wind, as it went
Creeping along from tent to tent,
And seeming to whisper, “All is well!”
A moment only he feels the spell
Of the place and the hour, and the secret dread
Of the lonely belfry and the dead;
For suddenly all his thoughts are bent
On a shadowy something far away,
Where the river widens to meet the bay,–
A line of black that bends and floats
On the rising tide like a bridge of boats.

Meanwhile, impatient to mount and ride,
Booted and spurred, with a heavy stride
On the opposite shore walked Paul Revere.
Now he patted his horse’s side,
Now he gazed at the landscape far and near,
Then, impetuous, stamped the earth,
And turned and tightened his saddle girth;
But mostly he watched with eager search
The belfry tower of the Old North Church,
As it rose above the graves on the hill,
Lonely and spectral and sombre and still.
And lo! as he looks, on the belfry’s height
A glimmer, and then a gleam of light!
He springs to the saddle, the bridle he turns,
But lingers and gazes, till full on his sight
A second lamp in the belfry burns.

A hurry of hoofs in a village street,
A shape in the moonlight, a bulk in the dark,
And beneath, from the pebbles, in passing, a spark
Struck out by a steed flying fearless and fleet;
That was all! And yet, through the gloom and the light,
The fate of a nation was riding that night;
And the spark struck out by that steed, in his flight,
Kindled the land into flame with its heat.
He has left the village and mounted the steep,
And beneath him, tranquil and broad and deep,
Is the Mystic, meeting the ocean tides;
And under the alders that skirt its edge,
Now soft on the sand, now loud on the ledge,
Is heard the tramp of his steed as he rides.

It was twelve by the village clock
When he crossed the bridge into Medford town.
He heard the crowing of the cock,
And the barking of the farmer’s dog,
And felt the damp of the river fog,
That rises after the sun goes down.

It was one by the village clock,
When he galloped into Lexington.
He saw the gilded weathercock
Swim in the moonlight as he passed,
And the meeting-house windows, black and bare,
Gaze at him with a spectral glare,
As if they already stood aghast
At the bloody work they would look upon.

It was two by the village clock,
When he came to the bridge in Concord town.
He heard the bleating of the flock,
And the twitter of birds among the trees,
And felt the breath of the morning breeze
Blowing over the meadow brown.
And one was safe and asleep in his bed
Who at the bridge would be first to fall,
Who that day would be lying dead,
Pierced by a British musket ball.

You know the rest. In the books you have read
How the British Regulars fired and fled,—
How the farmers gave them ball for ball,
From behind each fence and farmyard wall,
Chasing the redcoats down the lane,
Then crossing the fields to emerge again
Under the trees at the turn of the road,
And only pausing to fire and load.

So through the night rode Paul Revere;
And so through the night went his cry of alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm,—
A cry of defiance, and not of fear,
A voice in the darkness, a knock at the door,
And a word that shall echo for evermore!
For, borne on the night-wind of the Past,
Through all our history, to the last,
In the hour of darkness and peril and need,
The people will waken and listen to hear
The hurrying hoof-beats of that steed,
And the midnight message of Paul Revere.

What writers do you know of who’s writings should be recognized today?
Happy Independence Day!

Interview with the Cover Artist of ToF

ID Maria Edwards

The upcoming Twist of Fate (ToF) anthology has been a group effort mixed with a little bit of madness as all book publications are. From editing, to formatting, and book cover decisions, books are a lot of work even after all the writing and artwork has been done. I’ve truly enjoyed collaborating with my fellow Indies In Action (IIA) members. While the project is still coming together, the rest of the group has been participating in other ways. One of these ways is through interviews.

Kiriti Sengupta (India) has been very hard at work interviewing some of the contributors of ToF and I thought I would share these with you so you can get to know the contributors who are helping raise money for the May Tornadoes Fund. Thank you Kiriti for all the interviews and thank you Maria for all your hard work on the book cover of this project and the IIA group.

“TWIST OF FATE is a global effort. As such, I believe Stephen wanted all aspects of the project to be contributions, including the publishing and marketing efforts. Remember, together we are stronger and can have a greater effect than just one individual. I am honored to be just one part of the greater group that IS Indies in Action!”

Kiriti: Being an experienced Editor and a literary-worker, do you think that readers will remember the anthology for its content ?

Crystal: Yes, Kiriti, I really do. The contributions to “Twist of Fate” are deeply heartfelt. Many of the contributors have been through serious weather, if not tornadoes, themselves. We all have experienced things completely beyond our control that have changed our lives forever. You can feel that in every written work as well as the beautiful art that has been donated for inclusion.

When you break it down, what it amounts to is there is something in this book for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you love to read or are an admirer of great art, there is something for everyone. Not only will you feel great for having helped raise money to help your fellow man in his time of need, but you will have a wonderful book that has the capacity to become one of your favorites and can be enjoyed and shared with others for many years to come.

Interview Teaser:

Kiriti: What made you form the group Indies in Action ?

Stephen: It actually began in 1996. I was in Oklahoma City the year after the Alfred P. Murrah building was destroyed by a domestic terrorist attack. 167 people died, and the entire community was affected. There was virtually nobody who didn’t know someone who was affected. I guess you could say I was mad at God, and I wrote my feelings down on paper. The result was the short piece “Angels Were Sent,” which is included in our anthology. I showed it to a few people, and then it was filed away, helping nobody but me. Then, on December 12, when the Sandy Hook school was attacked in Newtown, Connecticut, I was teaching middle school students when the announcements were made over the radio. I saw the shock on the faces of those 11 year-old students, and I was enraged! By the time I arrived at home, I knew what I had to do. Rather than sit helpless, or maybe write my frustrations down on paper to be filed away, I decided to put my emotions into action. It was that day when Indies In Action was created. I put out a call, and created a Facebook event inviting authors, poets and artists from around the world to join together and put their feelings into motion. Together we created a charity anthology, Angels Cried, to help the victims of that horrible shooting. Not only did our work provide a way to put our talents to use for a good cause, money was raised for the people who needed it the most, and many of us became friends because of the project.

My Review

Love, Loss, Mystery, Humor,
Kick-Butt Action, Mythological Power,
This book has it all!

Review: 5 of 5 Stars!

Sacrifice is the third book in the Gryphon Series by Stacey Rourke.  After reading downloading my copy of Sacrifice it didn’t take me long to finish reading it.  I had to feed my starving mind with the words after waiting so long since Embrace.  Let me first say, Stacey knows how to satisfy her readers…and making them beg for more.

This story is full of emotional pain in different forms for the conduit and her team.  The experiences are heart wrenching. The characters have grown since the last book both with their skills and their survival while grieving, which is necessary in their line of life.  After the cliffhanger of book two, the reader doesn’t know what Celeste is so scared of.  I must say, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but let me tell you, it definitely makes the story awesome.

Something I love about Stacey’s books is how she tells the love stories.  She writes of kissing, holding hands, blushing, charming talk, having a shoulder to cry on, and doesn’t get into the “details” of their personal experiences… those are my favorite romances to read about. There are times I just want to hit some sense into Rowan’s head, and other times I want to kiss him.  The love triangle is definitely a good one and I can see it going either way.

Stacey really knows how to write a mystery into her stories and have all the pieces fall into place at the end.  With each book in the series it just keeps getting better and better.  The twists are unexpected and placed in just the right places, not fully clicking together until the end is near.  On top of that, the puzzle gets bigger as more questions arise.  Continuing from the first two books, the plot flows fluently, with no holes, and a direct path that doesn’t leave the reader lost trying to grasp what is happening.  In this book however, there is a mystery at the end you may or may not realize.  I certainly did and had a fictional heart attack in worry over what might take place in book four.

Sacrifice has a cliffhanger thrice as shocking as Embrace and The Conduit.  At the last words I mentally screamed “NO!!!!!” I really hope I get the chance to read book four soon because I NEED to KNOW!  Another Phenomenal job Stacey! 5 gold stars!

My Review with Stacey Rourke

Hello Stacey.  Thank you for giving me the chance to interview you for The Gryphon Series Blog Hop.  I’m just going to jump right in with the interview questions.  What is your favorite drink to accompany writing?
Sweet Tea!

Cool, refreshing, and sweet.  Now I want some.  I’ll be right back.  — AshleyNicole goes to the kitchen to gets some sweet tea…then decides on cinnamon apple spice hot tea with honey instead.—  I’m back, next question.  Is there one thing about life that truly fascinates you?
That miracles really do happen.

That they do.  What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Coffee creamer, left over pizza, fresh fruits, and veggies, oh and pickles!

I love pickles!  Okay, away from the subject of food before I leave to make a three course dinner.  *wink* Tell me a clean joke.
Polar Bear walks into a bar and says to the bartender “I’ll have a rum and………………………………………………………………………….coke.”

Bartender says, “What’s with the big pause?”
Polar Bear says, “I don’t know, I’ve always had them.”

That is probably the best clean joke I’ve heard in a long time and I may be slightly biased.  I love polar bears so that just made the joke ten times better. I’d love to travel and see some one day.  Speaking of travel, what is the most interesting trip you’ve ever taken?
All trips are interesting if you people watch at airports! I once saw a lady in a full body leopard print spandex outfit. Now THAT is interesting! She voluntarily left the house like that!

That IS interesting.  I can’t imagine wearing a full body spandex outfit, let alone being leopard print.  Maybe she was a Therianthrope?  Anyways…  I’ll get to the serious questions now. 😉  What inspired the Gryphon Series?
It was shortly after I had my daughters. Something about being the mother to two little girls opened my eyes to how few strong female role models the entertainment industry gives to our youth. One night I had a dream; it was the scene toward the end of Conduit where the hand comes out of the orchestra pit. It was such a real dream that it I NEEDED to flesh it out and breathe life into it. That was the birth of my series.

It’s amazing how children can inspire us and we definitely need more depictions of strong female roles.  How do you come up with your book titles?
My book titles are actually wildly unimaginative and completely straight forward. Hah! The Conduit- the main character IS the conduit of the Gryphon; the one being on earth chosen to possess all the powers the creature holds. Embrace- Celeste embraces her role as the chosen one. Sacrifice-again it’s pretty self-explanatory once you read it. Apparently I use up all my creativity writing and go basic for the titles.

Yes, I can see where the titles came from while reading the books, but they are great titles and are intriguing nevertheless.  Do you have any writers you consider to be your mentor(s)?
I look up to so many writers, but I really don’t have a mentor. Creativity spawns creativity so I find just immersing myself in the works of others inspires me. That said if Willow Cross would let me be her Padawan I could totally jump at the chance.

Who designed your book covers?
Actually that is a team project. Each cover in the Gryphon Series has an original art piece in it created by Crystal Ord. From there I give that to my cover artist KC Designs and she integrates the picture into whatever new fangled idea I’ve come up with. Lucky for me they both seem capable of reading my mind.

I love how you all contributed to the cover, incorporating hand drawn art. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in creating your books?
As the story of the Gryphon Series has progressed the plot seems to get deeper and more complex, which is to be expected. The challenge for me has been to maintain the same level of humor that fans have come to know and love. Hopefully I’m succeeding!

The humor makes the characters seem witty and I love it.  Makes me wish I could comes up with things to say like that, but I always come up with what to say after the fact.  *Ashley laughs at the thought* What have you learned in your writing experience thus far?
That there is always more to learn.

True, true.  When did you first think, “I’m a writer?”
Just now when you called me that. I am?!

Absolutely!  You’re a great writer!  What goals do you have in the writing world?
To take over the world!!! Bwahahahaha!!! Or … just get more people to read my books.

Do you have a dream that you hope your writing will lead to?
Let me tell you a little secret, any author that says they DON’T want either of those things is a big, liar. Seriously, check and see if their pants are on fire. Would I like a movie deal or to make a best sellers list? Darn skippy I would. But if I don’t? I have a job I love, following my passion. I’m a pretty frickin’ lucky girl.

Thank you for sharing that secret with us *winks*  What do you hope readers will take from reading your books?
There are so many books full of dark emotional angst out there I hope my books remind them it’s okay to lighten up and laugh! In addition to that the underlining message in the entire Gryphon Series is that there is a hero in each of us. In hard times we just have to dig deep to have the strength we need to overcome. We can all be the hero of our own story.

Your message definitely makes it through when I read your books.  Thank you so much Stacey for the interview!  I look forward to reading Sacrifice!

Reviews by Me

The Conduit
Book One in the Gryphon Series
By Stacey Rourke

The Conduit

 Synopsis:

My Review: 5 of 5 stars

Embrace
Book Two in the Gryphon Series
By Stacey Rourke

 Embrace

Synopsis:

Whether she likes it or not, eighteen year old Celeste Garrett has come to terms  with being  the Chosen One.

“Ya sure it’s broken?  Sounds like it’s on now.”
I turned my head in the direction of the counter.  He was right, something was whirring.  I could hear it, too.  But it wasn’t coming from the counter, or the DOA cappuccino machine.   It was closer than that.  Close enough that I could feel the vibration in my chest.
Oh, sweet-mother-of-all-that’s-good-and-pure, IT’S ME!! I’m purring!

Sacrifice
Book Three in the Gryphon Series
By Stacey Rourke

Sacrifice

Synopsis:

Celeste Garrett has finally found a happy balance in her life as the Chosen One, thanks in large part to a certain hunky Irishman. But if there’s any lesson she should heed since receiving her calling it’s that everything can change in the blink of an eye. Soon a terrible new threat, unlike anything she’s ever encountered, causes her to make a gut-wrenching choice that will strip her of someone she holds dear.

As much as she’d like to have a pity party for one, there’s no time for that now because wedding bells are ringing in Gainesboro! In between dress fittings and rehearsal dinners Celeste will have to fend off attacking demons and leering pirates. As if the Dark Army wasn’t scary enough our heroine is faced with the horrifying trauma of attending a bachelorette party with her mom and watching Grams do Jello shots. Is a walk down the aisle even possible for a member of the Garrett family when the Dark Army is out to destroy them? More importantly, will the Dark Army Glee Club sing at the reception?

Raise your glass to the happy couple, and get ready for a wedding…Conduit-style.

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

Womens Island E-BookMy friend Kaitlyn Deann contacted me and asked if I’d like to take part in this blog hop called ‘THE NEXT BIG THING’. Thanks, Kaitlyn! It is designed to raise awareness of our work, or work in progress. We do that by answering ten questions about it. We graciously thank the person who nominated us, and tag four to six other authors whose work could very well be THE NEXT BIG THING.

What is the working title of your next book?

Currently I am working on getting my novel, Women’s Island (a dystopian society novel), publication ready.  After that I’ll be back to work on The Gifted Series.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

After reading  several news articles about women’s rights being suppressed I came up with a dystopian society novel idea where men in power have taken away women’s liberties.  But women are strong and they ban together to protect themselves and their children.  It started out from a political view point and turned into something greater.  My story is about love, family, survival, and most of all… equality.

“As a nation, we are at the precipice of a slippery slope where men in power are arguing about how to take basic rights away from women. I shudder to think what lays at the bottom of that slope…” ~ Sarah Fister Gale

Here are some articles that pushed me to write this story:

Impacting article one

Impacting article two

What genre does your book fall under?

This book is definitely Science Fiction in a Dystopian Society sub-genre.  Drastic changes have occurred Socially in reference to gender, Scientifically in humane experimentation, and much more.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

This is always a tough one for me because if I ever was able to have my book turned into a movie, I’d rather have unknown actors play my characters.  That way they can be come the characters in my viewers and readers eyes.  However, I will do my best to choose some known actors just for the fun of it.

Mercy Chamberlain – Played by Cassidy Freeman

Andrew Chamberlain – Played by Chris Evans

Christian Chamberlain – Played by Alina Foley

Luke Chamberlain – Played by a cute 3 year old

Ever – Played by Kristin Kreuk

Officer Fremont – Played by Jake Abel

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

How far will you go to protect your children when the government decides you are now their property?

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Women’s Island will be self-published through Smashwords, Amazon, and Createspace as all my books will in the future.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Too long for my liking.  Four months.  Finding time to write sometimes ends up being moments few and far between.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

This is a tough one because Women’s Island is a very specific dystopian society novel but I’d compare it to The Hunger Games and Divergent.  Both these books have extreme changes in power and society.  The children are not treated well in their innocence but rather used in the government’s project to continue controlling the people.  The government in Women’s Island views children in a similar light and society has drastically fallen from what it is today.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

My son is always a big inspiration when I write.  This book really is important to me because I feel it could make a difference in how people view women, children, and equality in all fronts.  Really, my inspiration for this book comes from many people, many issues, and other aspects of life.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Women’s Island is more than a suppression story in a city ruled by men.  The reader will go on a journey to find a secret society of a rumored haven for women and children.  Along the way they will battle creatures that are not what nature intended and stay in places that seem impossible to exist.
